About: The Mineral Collection
The collection is purely derived from pieces of minerals that are found within nature. The world of geology and mineralogy have different species, from which different chemical compounds attain a defined chemical composition with a specific crystal structure that forms naturally through time, creating beautiful and interesting compositions.
They have always been a fascinating source of inspiration for us humans be it through spiritual means or purely due to the aesthetic attributes that each mineral fashions. The forms for each species are usually very vivid in their colors, with strange and alien-like compositions.
The minerals fluorite, rhodochrosite, and pyrite were essentially chosen based on their form, color combos and composition that create complex yet very familiar structures that are used in geometry and architecture. The intersections of fully formed cubes and octagonal prisms juxtaposed with raw stone like structures, showcase a very elemental value to design. This is quite true and reflects very well in today’s application of design methods be it in architecture, fashion and furniture design.
The approach to create this capsule collection of carpets was purely a graphical exercise of recreating these 3d-like forms that intersect, intertwine and cascade with complex color gradations based on actual photos of the minerals. The choice of different methods of carpet tufting, weaving and looming techniques like cut pile and loop pile are used to create contrasting textures with variations in height and blending. The culmination of the use of these varied techniques is the very basis of mimicking the minerals but within the limits of what carpet production can achieve.
